Systemic cancer therapy pathways

Clear, verified chronological guides explaining what to expect before clinic attendance, during intravenous infusions, and throughout recovery at home.

Treatment steps

Structured preparation guides

Phase one

Day of intravenous infusion

Arrive hydrated and wearing loose clothing with easy arm access. Your nursing team checks blood counts and pre-medications before setting your infusion line.

Phase two

Oral medication at home

Store targeted tablets in their original packaging away from moisture. Keep a dedicated log of administration times and follow anti-emetic instructions precisely as prescribed.

Phase three

Nutritive supportive care

Maintain small, frequent meals rich in protein and electrolytes during the recovery week. Rinse with non-alcoholic oral solutions after eating to protect sensitive mucosal tissue.

Critical safety

Any temperature above 37.5°C requires immediate hospital assessment

Neutropenic sepsis is a medical emergency. Do not take paracetamol to mask a fever; phone your 24-hour acute oncology triage line immediately.

Practical details

Clinic visits and day wards

Full blood counts must be processed 24 to 48 hours prior to every cycle. Most NHS hospital trusts offer outpatient phlebotomy drop-in clinics or coordinate blood draws through your local general practice surgery.

One nominated companion may accompany you during routine consultations. While day-unit infusion suites have variable seating space, bringing warm layers, reading material, and personal hydration flasks is strongly encouraged.
